Government Pushes Battery Storage Integration for Rooftop Solar
Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari announced that recent policy revisions are designed to encourage rooftop solar users to adopt Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Facing risks from imported fuel volatility and daytime grid overload, the government is launching utility-scale BESS pilot projects across distribution networks while urging residential and commercial consumers to store daytime generation for high-cost evening peak hours.
Electricity Tariffs Set to Increase in September as Relief Expires
Pakistani electricity consumers face higher bills this month following the expiration of the Rs 1.99 per unit quarterly relief that applied from June through August. Power distribution companies (DISCOs) have formally petitioned NEPRA to recover over Rs 23 billion for the April–June quarter, which is projected to add roughly Rs 1 per unit back to monthly bills starting in September. This rebound in grid pricing reinforces the financial benefit of transitioning to rooftop solar to lock in long-term energy savings.
Power Outages Drive Commercial Adoption of Integrated Storage Systems
With national power deficits topping 4,000 MW and grid load-shedding impacting industrial sectors, Pakistani commercial and industrial (C&I) businesses are rapidly turning to factory-assembled hybrid solar-plus-storage solutions. The market is shifting away from expensive diesel generator setups toward integrated battery energy systems that maintain uninterrupted production and maximize self-consumption during load-shedding hours.
