ApnaSolar Weekly Roundup: Grid Pressures Mount, Battery Storage Gains Ground, and Fuel Charges Spike

Solar Expansion Increases Strain on Central Grid Infrastructure

A report published on October 1 reveals that distributed solar now accounts for approximately 20% of Pakistan’s total electricity generation, up from just 3% at the beginning of the decade. While rooftop systems have yielded billions in national fuel import savings, a 12% drop in grid electricity demand over the past three years is heightening financial pressure on local distribution companies (DISCOs). The rapid shift to rooftop generation is also impacting utility revenues and debt repayments for legacy thermal projects, including CPEC-backed coal facilities.

Electricity Consumers Face Rs 25 Billion Fuel Cost Adjustment

At a public hearing, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) reviewed an additional Rs 1.73 per unit Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) that will add a collective Rs 25 billion burden to October electricity bills. The surge stems from forced reliance on expensive imported coal and RLNG after lower-than-expected availability of hydropower and unexpected nuclear plant outages. These recurring tariff hikes continue to drive residential and commercial energy users toward self-generating solar setups to hedge against grid volatility.

Commercial Sector Accelerates Solar and Battery Integration

To adapt to lower net-billing buyback rates and secure reliable off-grid power, agricultural and commercial enterprises across Pakistan are increasingly combining solar arrays with battery energy storage systems (BESS). In a recent commercial deployment, FrieslandCampina Engro Pakistan Limited installed a 450 kW solar PV system integrated with a 255 kWh BESS at its Nara Dairy Farm facility. The installation reflects a broader trend among Pakistani businesses investing in hybrid solar infrastructure to stabilize operational costs and maintain continuous daytime and evening energy.
