ApnaSolar Weekly Pulse: Solar Expo 2026, Regulatory Reforms, and Market Dynamics
350+ Global Companies Gather for Solar Pakistan 2026 in Karachi
The 14th edition of the Solar Pakistan exhibition opened at the Karachi Expo Centre, bringing together more than 350 companies from 15 countries to showcase clean energy innovations. Running through October 11, the event places a strong emphasis on high-efficiency solar modules, smart grid systems, and energy storage solutions. Chinese energy storage manufacturers in particular are expanding their presence at the expo, responding to rising demand for battery solutions across Pakistan's residential, agricultural, and industrial sectors.
Government Moves to Strengthen NEPRA Amid Rapid Solar Proliferation
Federal Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee on Power Sector Regulatory Regime to address structural changes caused by widespread rooftop solar adoption. With rapid solarization altering national electricity consumption patterns, the government is working to modernize the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority's (NEPRA) regulatory framework. The efforts aim to keep pace with technological changes, protect consumer interests, and build a more flexible framework for private-sector renewable energy investments.
Research Highlights Dual Drivers Behind Pakistan's Solar Surge
A new study published by researchers from the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) and UK universities revealed that Pakistan's solar boom operates through two distinct channels. In regions with stable grid supply like LESCO and IESCO, solar adoption is primarily driven by soaring grid tariffs, which have surged roughly 110% over the past three fiscal years. Conversely, in regions suffering from frequent power outages, uptake is dominated by unregistered off-grid and behind-the-meter hybrid systems intended primarily to hedge against load-shedding.
