Power Division Directs DISCOs to Clear Net-Metering Backlog
In a major development for solar prosumers across Pakistan, the Ministry of Energy's Power Division instructed all electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and the Power Information Technology Company (PITC) to fast-track the clearance of pending net-metering applications. The directive specifically targets applications where consumers paid their demand notices or completed key formalities prior to the February 9 cut-off date. PITC has been tasked with updating billing software to ensure eligible rooftop solar owners are promptly integrated into the system without facing further procedural delays.
NEPRA Notifies PSDR 2026 Framework to Reform Grid Performance
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) officially notified the Performance Standards (Distribution) Regulations, 2026 (PSDR 2026), replacing two-decade-old rules to overhaul power distribution standards. The new regulations introduce guaranteed performance metrics for DISCOs, holding utilities accountable for power reliability, outage durations, load-shedding, power quality, and consumer complaint resolution. Critically for the renewable sector, PSDR 2026 also mandates that distribution companies upgrade grid digitalization and actively support the integration of distributed energy resources and storage.
Lawmakers Push for Battery Storage and Flexible Energy Contracts as Solar Crosses 50 GW
During a high-level dialogue convened by the Parliamentary Forum on Energy and Economy in Islamabad, energy experts and parliamentarians highlighted that Pakistan’s cumulative solar capacity across rooftop, industrial, agricultural, and utility segments has reached an estimated 50 GW. In light of this decentralized solar expansion, lawmakers urged the government to move away from rigid, long-term fuel contracts that risk circular debt. Industry specialists advocated instead for accelerated investments in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), flexible gas procurement, and grid modernization to manage daytime solar surpluses effectively.
