NEPRA Approves Rs 1.11/Unit Fuel Cost Adjustment for October Bills

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has notified a positive fuel charges adjustment (FCA) of Rs 1.11 per unit for electricity consumed in August, which will be added to consumer bills in October 2026. The adjustment applies across ex-WAPDA distribution companies (XWDISCOs) and K-Electric, excluding lifeline consumers. Regulators cited higher costs from spot-market RLNG imports and lower-than-projected hydropower availability during August as primary drivers, providing consumers with a clear incentive to consider self-generation through rooftop solar systems.

Government Moves to Reform NEPRA Amid Rapid Solarization

Federal Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired a steering committee meeting to restructure NEPRA's regulatory framework in response to Pakistan's accelerating rooftop solar adoption. As residential and commercial consumers increasingly generate their own power, changing demand patterns on the national grid have created financial and operational challenges for traditional utilities. The proposed structural reforms aim to modernize grid operations, potentially separating distribution network management from supply services while fostering competitive market participation.

Pakistan’s Solar Output Overtakes Nuclear Power Generation

According to recent industry findings, solar power generation in Pakistan reached 36.3 terawatt-hours (TWh), officially surpassing nuclear power generation for the first time. The surge is largely decentralized and driven by private rooftop installations. In the first seven months of 2026 alone, Pakistan imported over 7.2 gigawatts of solar panels, maintaining its position as one of the world's largest import markets for solar technology.
